Theory of Success

Success is what dreams are made of. Success is about making it in life. Fast cars, expensive penthouses, designer labels—in other words, high material viability is the new success mantra. Yet we see large hordes of people demanding to do more than that by trying to find a common denominator for success. No longer weighed in terms of tidy bank balances, success is now regarded as all-inclusive quotient of material, emotional and spiritual gratification. Belying Alvin Toffler's apocalyptic cry against capitalism and urbanization, success does not remain merely a socially abrasive economic phenomenon in a highly competitive world. Today success represents a holistic and positive attitude to life.

Attitude is everything. If you think you can, you most certainly can. Success is not closeted within some kind of brick and mortar premises. It assumes the individuality of a complete act executed with perfection. Material achievements do not define life. We do not remember the sports stars for the products they endorse but the spirit of achievement they represent. In the abundance of positive attitude underlies the grandeur of a truly rewarding and rich life.

Ancient Indian wisdom believes that the most qualifying aspect of success lies in following the four Purusharthas( tenets) of life. The Purusharthas are based on the four tenets of artha (wealth, social security), kama (fulfillment of desire), dharma( principles)and moksha (salvation). Wealth or artha means earthly possessions and material gains. People usually work hard to procure such standards of success, and yet, find themselves wanting more. Desires condemned by puritans the world over, is motivating force behind all action that manifests as success. High moral credo or dharma is a life based on principles. However the crowning glory to successful life is moksha or freedom from all desires. Artha, kama, dharma and moksha patterns a rite of passage for an adult life. According to Indian thought, success depends upon the smooth transition of an individual through each of these passages.

However, the culture factor definitely influences the success expectation among a people.

SCHOOLS OF THOUGHT:

Kautilya, a 4th century BC statesman from Northern India, defined success as an autocratic skill par excellence in his economic masterpiece—Arthashastra. Instrumental in dislodging the Nand dynasty from the capital city of Pataliputra and establishing the Mauryan dynasty over India, Kautilya also known as Chanakya remains ancient India's best success story. His laws on government have been emulated through out the annals of Indian politics.

Kautuilya stands for the ultimate in shrewd statesmanship. According to his treatise on statecraft, it would make better sense for you to reach your goal by using subversive methods when you're up against a strong adversary. All out war is a good option only when the opponent is weak. Perhaps another mind, which comes closest to such shrewd statesmanship, belongs to Niccolo Machiavelli.

Associated with corrupt ,totalitarian government the political genius of Machiavelli was overshadowed by the reputation that was unfairly given to him because of a misunderstanding of his views on politics. Nonetheless he is revered as a political cult figure espousing the most radical means to retain or procure power. The fact remains that the Machiavellian Head wears the success hat in this world today.

Sometime during the 1950's, Abraham Maslow attempted to synthesize a large body of research related to human motivation. Maslow posited a hierarchy of human needs based on two groupings: deficiency needs and growth needs. According to his theory, if and only if the deficiency needs are met, is the individual ready to act upon the growth needs. When the growth needs are realized in an individual, he becomes self-actualized. Maslow evaluated (1954) this self-actualization as success. His basic position is that—as one becomes more self-actualized and transcendent, one becomes wiser (develops wisdom) and automatically knows what to do in a wide variety of situations.

Alvin Toffler, one of the world's most well known futurists, published his Future Shock in 1970 which sold more than a million copies. Painting a dismal picture about the fast changing world he made people, institutions, governments, schools reckon change and deal positively with it. When the world was reeling under the pressure of Vietnam war, flower power and mercurial economy,Toffler compelled people to review stability and its role in the development of culture, society and civilization. He taught us to deal with success and its changing parameters and braced us for the coming world. Another major figure worth taking a look at while talking about success, happens to be Edward de Bono.

Edward de Bono is regarded by many as the leading authority in the field of creative thinking and the direct teaching of thinking as a skill. He has written 62 books with translations into 37 languages. He is the originator of lateral thinking, which treats creativity as the behavior of information in a self-organizing information system—such as the neural networks in the brain. From such a consideration arise the deliberate and formal tools of lateral thinking and parallel thinking, which, if put to use in the pursuit of success—it might lead to better results.

For many successful people, the journey begins as a search for the self-image or self-creation. As New Age guru Deepak Chopra puts it in his best selling Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, each of us is here to discover our higher or spiritual self. He believes that focused and responsible effort, and a consistently positive outlook constitutes success. Together, they form the key to abundance—not merely in terms of material wealth but also in the form of opportunities that can become steppingstones to a completely successful life. Says Chopra: "All problems contain the seeds of opportunity, and this awareness allows you to take the moment and transform it to a better situation."

50000 IT professionals in India may lose their jobs...

Over 50,000 IT professionals in the country may lose their jobs over the next six months as the situation in the sector is expected to worsen due to the impact of global economic meltdown on the export-driven industry, a forecast by a union of IT Enabled Services warned. ".

There would be 50,000 job losses (IT and BPO put together) over the next six months," Karthik Shekhar, general secretary of UNITES India, a politically neutral union of ITES professionals told PTI. The job loss in the IT and BPO sector in the country topped 10,000 in the September-December period, Shekar said. While employees of medium-sized companies bore the brunt of job losses in the September-December period, it's going to be their counterparts in the big and small firms who would increasingly face the axe in the coming six months, he said.

UNITES India, affiliated to the global union United Network International, suggested that the companies in trouble could resort to salary and incentive cuts without trying to "squeeze" the staff, rather than adopting the "layoff path". Employees are willing to take such cuts for 12-16 months till the demand picks up again, when such benefits should be restored to them.

Shekhar said senior officials of the industry had concurred with the figure of 10,000 job loses in September-December, stating that it accounted for "bottom five per cent of the performers". Consultations with the union's counterparts in the US and UK suggested that slowdown would continue to hit the offshore sourcing space, he said.

He said factors like continued slowdown, likely "tax application" to companies outsourcing jobs under the new US regime and tightening in regard to H1B visas were among the key reasons cited for the acceleration in issue of pink slips.

Power Of Positive Talk

I remember my dad teaching me the power of language at a very young age. Not only did my dad understand that specific words affect our mental pictures, but he understood words are a powerful programming factor in lifelong success.

One particularly interesting event occurred when I was eight. As a kid, I was always climbing trees, poles, and literally hanging around upside down from the rafters of our lake house. So, it came to no surprise for my dad to find me at the top of a 30-foot tree swinging back and forth. My little eight-year-old brain didn't realize the tree could break or I could get hurt. I just thought it was fun to be up so high.

My older cousin, Tammy, was also in the same tree. She was hanging on the first big limb, about ten feet below me. Tammy's mother also noticed us at the exact time my dad did. About that time a huge gust of wind came over the tree. I could hear the leaves start to rattle and the tree begin to sway. I remember my dad's voice over the wind yell, "Bart, Hold on tightly." So I did. The next thing I know, I heard Tammy screaming at the top of her lungs, laying flat on the ground. She had fallen out of the tree.
I scampered down the tree to safety. My dad later told me why she fell and I did not. Apparently, when Tammy's mother felt the gust of wind, she yelled out, "Tammy, don't fall!" And Tammy did. fall.

My dad then explained to me that the mind has a very difficult time processing a negative image. In fact, people who rely on internal pictures cannot see a negative at all. In order for Tammy to process the command of not falling, her nine-year-old brain had to first imagine falling, then try to tell the brain not to do what it just imagined. Whereas, my eight-year-old brain instantly had an internal image of me hanging on tightly.

This concept is especially useful when you are attempting to break a habit or set a goal. You can't visualize not doing something. The only way to properly visualize not doing something is to actually find a word for what you want to do and visualize that. For example, when I was thirteen years old, I played for my junior high school football team. I tried so hard to be good, but I just couldn't get it together at that age. I remember hearing the words run through my head as I was running out for a pass, "Don't drop it!" Naturally, I dropped the ball.

My coaches were not skilled enough to teach us proper "self-talk." They just thought some kids could catch and others couldn't. I'll never make it pro, but I'm now a pretty good Sunday afternoon football player, because all my internal dialogue is positive and encourages me to win. I wish my dad had coached me playing football instead of just climbing trees. I might have had a longer football career.

Here is a very easy demonstration to teach your kids and your friends the power of a toxic vocabulary. Ask them to hold a pen or pencil. Hand it to them. Now, follow my instructions carefully. Say to them, "Okay, try to drop the pencil." Observe what they do.

Most people release their hands and watch the pencil hit the floor. You respond, "You weren't paying attention. I said TRY to drop the pencil. Now please do it again." Most people then pick up the pencil and pretend to be in excruciating pain while their hand tries but fails to drop the pencil.

The point is made.

If you tell your brain you will "give it a try," you are actually telling your brain to fail. I have a "no try" rule in my house and with everyone I interact with. Either people will do it or they won't. Either they will be at the party or they won't. I'm brutal when people attempt to lie to me by using the word try. Do they think I don't know they are really telegraphing to the world they have no intention of doing it but they want me to give them brownie points for pretended effort? You will never hear the words "I'll try" come out of my mouth unless I'm teaching this concept in a seminar.

If you "try" and do something, your unconscious mind has permission not to succeed. If I truly can't make a decision I will tell the truth. "Sorry John. I'm not sure if I will be at your party or not. I've got an outstanding commitment. If that falls through, I will be here. Otherwise, I will not. Thanks for the invite."
People respect honesty. So remove the word "try" from your vocabulary.

My dad also told me that psychologists claim it takes seventeen positive statements to offset one negative statement. I have no idea if it is true, but the logic holds true. It might take up to seventeen compliments to offset the emotional damage of one harsh criticism.
These are concepts that are especially useful when raising children.

Ask yourself how many compliments you give yourself daily versus how many criticisms. Heck, I know you are talking to yourself all day long. We all have internal voices that give us direction.
So, are you giving yourself the 17:1 ratio or are you shortchanging yourself with toxic self-talk like, " I'm fat. Nobody will like me. I'll try this diet. I'm not good enough. I'm so stupid. I'm broke, etc. etc."

If our parents can set a lifetime of programming with one wrong statement, imagine the kind of programming you are doing on a daily basis with your own internal dialogue.

Here is a list of Toxic Vocabulary words.

Notice when you or other people use them.

Ø But: Negates any words that are stated before it.

Ø Try: Presupposes failure.

Ø If: Presupposes that you may not.

Ø Might: It does nothing definite. It leaves options for your listener..

Ø Would Have: Past tense that draws attention to things that didn't actually happen.

Ø Should Have: Past tense that draws attention to things that didn't actually happen (and implies guilt.)

Ø Could Have: Past tense that draws attention to things that didn't actually happen but the person tries to take credit as if it did happen.

Ø Can't/Don't: These words force the listener to focus on exactly the opposite of what you want. This is a classic mistake that parents and coaches make without knowing the damage of this linguistic error.

Examples:
Toxic phrase: "Don't drop the ball!"
Likely result: Drops the ball
Better language: "Catch the ball!"
Toxic phrase: "You shouldn't watch so much television."
Likely result: Watches more television.
Better language: "I read too much television makes people stupid. You might find yourself turning that TV off and picking up one of those books more often!"

Exercise: Take a moment to write down all the phrases you use on a daily basis or any Toxic self-talk that you have noticed yourself using. Write these phrases down so you will begin to catch yourself as they occur and change them.

How to become a leader

To be a leader or achiever in any field, you must ‘Think Big’. There is a shortage of leaders and people who have the ability to ‘Think Big’. If you spend time to develop such unique characteristics then you ought to become a leader. We would become a valuable commodity indeed. There are lots of differences between the big thinker and small thinker.

Here are some obvious differences:

Thinking Small:

1.Think of excuses
2.Panics
3.Criticizes those around them.
4.Bears a grudge
5.Easily sidetracked
6.Try to divide people
7.Loses control of emotions
8.Loses confidence easily
9.Does not plan. Does not think ahead
10.Thinks there is a scarcity of opportunities
11.Becomes envious and jealous when others succeed.

Thinking Big:

1.Sees reason why
2.Stays calm under pressure.
3.Helps and encourages
4.Forgives
5.Stays focused
6.Unites people.
7.Controls their emotions
8.Shows faith
9.Plans and sets goals
10.Thinks there is an abundance of opportunity
11.Happy when others succeed

Just think how much we would be able to achieve if we ‘Think Big’.

• "You see, wire telegraph is a kind of a very, very long cat. You pull his tail in New York and his head is meowing in Los Angeles. Do you understand this? And radio operates exactly the same way: you send signals here, they receive them there. The only difference is that there is no cat."
• "One had to cram all this stuff into one's mind for the examinations, whether one liked it or not. This coercion had such a deterring effect on me that, after I had passed the final examination, I found the consideration of any scientific problems distasteful to me for an entire year."
• "...one of the strongest motives that lead men to art and science is escape from everyday life with its painful crudity and hopeless dreariness, from the fetters of one's own ever-shifting desires. A finely tempered nature longs to escape from the personal life into the world of objective perception and thought."
• "He who joyfully marches to music rank and file, has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would surely suffice. This disgrace to civilization should be done away with at once. Heroism at command, how violently I hate all this, how despicable and ignoble war is; I would rather be torn to shreds than be a part of so base an action. It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing but an act of murder."
• "A human being is a part of a whole, called by us _universe_, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest... a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty."
• "Not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that can be counted counts."

Demerits of Indian Education system

India aspires to become a superpower and play an important role in the world. To make that happen various loopholes had to be rectified. The bottlenecks we face must be solved in an effective manner. Education system plays an important role for the development of a nation as it enhances the country’s economic growth and technological expertise thereby reducing various social ills such as illiteracy, poverty etc..

What really are the challenges of this education system?

Suppose you go to a student of 12th standard in Chennai and ask a question from the text book, the answer he gives would be identical to that in a text book leaving neither a full stop nor the vocabulary used in that text book. However doesn’t apply to all students but still most of the students (though highly capable) are forced to do so and it has become a norm in their education system. Suppose if there is a mismatch between the answer he gives in the exam and the solution given in the text book, he would be awarded with negative marks(though his concept is correct). They expect him to mug up and give the same answer. The education system in general must be held responsible for this. The Indian education system in general faces this problem.

Isn’t there anyone who succeeded with this education system?

Of course there are people who could shine with this same education system. But we need to accept the fact that they are not the products of this education system. Instead they had inspired themselves. But an education system should make many shine.

What are the steps needed to be incorporated in the future to change this system?

As a matter of fact a revolution is needed to solve this crisis. Students aren’t willing to mug up but their hands are tied. We need to lay emphasis on practical education system wherein students will be able to learn with all the modern technique and equipments available and they need not be a bookworm always. By adopting this modern education system the quality of the education would be improved drastically. There need not be thousands of examination but the students can be assessed by their “points” during the course of one year. They need not be loaded with writing a lot of assignments, but they can be given various project works, seminar works, research paper presentation works. This would make the education livelier and I am damn sure many would love such activities. This would reduce the number of school drop outs. As the students start to love the subject there would be a lot of scientists, entrepreneurs, politicians, etc..

I don’t really blame this system entirely but it would be the best if such changes are adopted. I have only suggested only a few and there are many things which are to be changed.

The Obstacle in our path

In ancient times, a king had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the king's wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it.

Many loudly blamed the king for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the big stone out of the way. Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. On approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded. As the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the king indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The peasant learned what many others never understand.

Every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve one's condition."

Life Still Has A Meaning

If there is a future there is time for mending-

Time to see your troubles coming to an ending.

Life is never hopeless however great your sorrow

If you're looking forward to a new tomorrow.

If there is time for wishing then there is time for hoping-

When through doubt and darkness you are blindly groping.

Though the heart be heavy and hurt you may be feeling-

If there is time for praying there is time for healing.

So if through your window there is a new day breaking-

Thank God for the promise, though mind and soul be aching,

If with harvest over there is grain enough for gleaning-

There is a new tomorrow and life still has meaning

The power of Determination

In 1883, a creative engineer named John Roebling was inspired by an idea to build a spectacular bridge connecting New York with the Long Island. However bridge building experts throughout the world thought that this was an impossible feat and told Roebling to forget the idea. It just could not be done. It was not practical. It had never been done before.

Roebling could not ignore the vision he had in his mind of this bridge. He thought about it all the time and he knew deep in his heart that it could be done. He just had to share the dream with someone else. After much discussion and persuasion he managed to convince his son Washington, an upcoming engineer, that the bridge in fact could be built.

Working together for the first time, the father and son developed concepts of how it could be accomplished and how the obstacles could be overcome. With great excitement and inspiration, and the headiness of a wild challenge before them, they hired their crew and began to build their dream bridge.

The project started well, but when it was only a few months underway a tragic accident on the site took the life of John Roebling. Washington was injured and left with a certain amount of brain damage, which resulted in him not being able to walk or talk or even move.

"We told them so."

"Crazy men and their crazy dreams."

"It`s foolish to chase wild visions."

Everyone had a negative comment to make and felt that the project should be scrapped since the Roeblings were the only ones who knew how the bridge could be built. In spite of his handicap Washington was never discouraged and still had a burning desire to complete the bridge and his mind was still as sharp as ever.

He tried to inspire and pass on his enthusiasm to some of his friends, but they were too daunted by the task. As he lay on his bed in his hospital room, with the sunlight streaming through the windows, a gentle breeze blew the flimsy white curtains apart and he was able to see the sky and the tops of the trees outside for just a moment.

It seemed that there was a message for him not to give up. Suddenly an idea hit him. All he could do was move one finger and he decided to make the best use of it. By moving this, he slowly developed a code of communication with his wife.

He touched his wife's arm with that finger, indicating to her that he wanted her to call the engineers again. Then he used the same method of tapping her arm to tell the engineers what to do. It seemed foolish but the project was under way again.

For 13 years Washington tapped out his instructions with his finger on his wife's arm, until the bridge was finally completed. Today the spectacular Brooklyn Bridge stands in all its glory as a tribute to the triumph of one man's indomitable spirit and his determination not to be defeated by circumstances. It is also a tribute to the engineers and their team work, and to their faith in a man who was considered mad by half the world. It stands too as a tangible monument to the love and devotion of his wife who for 13 long years patiently decoded the messages of her husband and told the engineers what to do.

Perhaps this is one of the best examples of a never-say-die attitude that overcomes a terrible physical handicap and achieves an impossible goal.

Often when we face obstacles in our day-to-day life, our hurdles seem very small in comparison to what many others have to face. The Brooklyn Bridge shows us that dreams that seem impossible can be realised with determination and persistence, no matter what the odds are.

Even the most distant dream can be realized with determination and persistence

Inspiring Quotes

In this article I will describe few quotes and stories that had impressed me a lot.

“Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave it up” – Thomas Edison

Thomas Edison failed 10,000 times before he perfected the incandescent electric bulb. That is he met with temporary defeats ten thousand times before he was crowned with success.

“Impossible can always be broken down into possibilities”

“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams and live the life that you have imagined”

Our thoughts have an enormous potential that it can do whatever things that favors us to achieve our dreams. Whatever we believe will happen. The real power lies in our hands.

“What we see is mainly due to what we look for.”

The Power of Subconscious mind

There are two types of minds within us

1. Conscious mind

2. Subconscious mind.

The former one is called the subjective mind and it is our habitual thinking and the latter one is called the objective mind and it is our creative mind.

I will in this article deal about those in detail.

As said our Subconscious mind is our creative mind. Whatever it accepts will be transformed into actions. It will react as per our thoughts. The Subconscious mind has a law which works for both positive and negative thoughts alike. If our thoughts are harmonious then it will work in a constructive manner and on the contrary it will work in a destructive manner.

A research conducted by psychologists and psychiatrists shows that whatever the subconscious mind thinks will transform into reality. Suppose if you believe that you can achieve your goal then you would, else you would not. All things that have happened to you are based on your thoughts impressed upon the subconscious mind.

The subconscious mind will accept whatever the conscious mind accepts to be true. It uses all the experiences gained by the conscious mind right from the birth. Whatever you conscious mind think will be seeded into your subconscious mind. And all those thoughts impressed upon the subconscious mind would be transformed into actions.

“Subconscious mind is susceptible to your Conscious mind.”

Impact of suggestions:

The dictionary meaning of suggestion is “An idea that has been put forth in one’s mind”.

Suppose you go to a timid looking guy in a ship and say “You look to me as if you are fallen ill. I think you have fallen seasick.” He then falls sick. This is because of your suggestion that has been believed to be true by that person due to his character. If he had known the power of his subconscious mind and immediately rejected your suggestion he would have not fallen seasick.

“Nothing can impress your subconscious mind without the will of your consciousness”.

Right from our infancy we would have heard many negative comments from our friends, teachers, relatives etc. But the power really vests on our hand to accept the suggestion. Unless and otherwise your consciousness accept the suggestion, it cannot have an impact on your subconscious mind.

Suppose you believe to be topsy-turvy you would be so. Suppose you believe to be robust you would be so.

So believe in yourselves.

I will post many such articles regularly in my blog.

Role of Vision in success

Role of Vision in Success:

Vision without Action is a daydream, and an Action without Vision is a nightmare.” – Japanese Proverb.

This Japanese proverb has inspired me a lot.

Creating a vision for ourselves is an important aspect in achieving success. It is the most important and foremost step in achieving our dreams. We can’t really achieve anything in this world by performing an action without a vision. Many of the world’s great personalities who have made a mark in their respective field have realized how important ‘Vision’ is in their quest for success. Once you have a very big Vision in your mind and work towards it you would realize how fast you are moving in the road of success.

Don’t settle for average:

“The hardest struggle of all is to be something different from what the average man is.” – Charles M.Schwartz

While developing our vision we must not settle with something small. Instead it should be something ‘extraordinary’. As the word suggests it is something above average. Only those who think extraordinary will be able to taste success. ‘Ordinary’ is not something to be strived for. It puts you on a course of frustration and mediocrity. Whereas ‘Extraordinary’ takes you to a very high level and makes you unique from the rest of the world.

Great achievers and leaders have a common characteristic which separates them from others. That something special makes them different from average person. They are able to determine their goals and focus on it. They do so with perfect clarity and vision.

So make an extraordinary Vision for yourself….

I believe that I am moving faster in the road of success.....I am progressing everyday and I believe that I can do my best…..
